MILRC - who we are
What is the Independent Living Resource Centre (ILRC)? _________________________________________________ MILRC who we are We are one of 29 Centres within the Canadian Association of Independent Living Resource Centres (CAILC), who serve over 250,000 people throughout Canada. We are a non-profit organization.
What is the IndependentWe share a unique vision were people with disabilities are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives, social, cultural, economic and political. We serve all persons with disabilities that make up 17.7% of the population in Northumberland County. The MILRC is managed, and staffed by persons with disabilities. The MILRC recognizes the barriers that people with disabilities face and offers four core programs to help break down these barriers and empower and encourage everyone to participate in all facets of life. We encourage people with disabilities to make their own choices and control the supports and services in their own lives through four core programs: Information & Networking, Peer Support, Independent Living Skills Development, Research and Community Development. All people with disabilities, their friends and families are welcome to drop in or attend groups and support services. Living Resource Centre (ILRC)? Independent Living Resource Centre is a non-profit group that is controlled by persons with disabilities to support people with any kind of disability or a combination of disabilities. It's a centre where persons with disabilities can meet, share tips and information, and learn from each other. What does the ILRC do? The ILRC helps consumers (people with disabilities):
• stay in control of decisions that affect them, • find the services and contacts they need, • get information that is useful and clear, • break through barriers that are in the way, and • develop their skills! Independent Living (IL) is an international movement. It changes the way people with a disability view themselves and the way in which service delivery systems in the community respond to meeting their actual needs. The Independent Living approach empowers people with disabilities to examine choices, to make their own decisions and to take risks as a means of directing and managing their own lives. IL has been created by and for people with disabilities and is an alternative to traditional models. In the traditional model, professionals were in control and the disability was viewed as "the problem". The solution was medical/rehabilitation intervention (i.e. counsellors, rehab workers, social workers, doctors etc.). In the IL model, the physical and attitudinal barriers are the problems. The solutions to the problems are self-help, skills development, peer support and the removal of barriers. Can We Help You? We are one of two Centers from Independent Living in New Brunswick. Our sister centre is in Shippigan, New Brunswick. We serve the Miramichi Region. We help persons with disabilities gain knowledge and skills, and find the services and agencies they need.
